Here’s a new series for you where we list the things we’ve binged this week! Mainly recommendations, with the occasional regrettable binge too.
1. High Maintenance season 1 and web series
If I had seen episode 3 of High Maintenance in 2016, it would have been on my top TV episodes list. The episode is told from the perspective of the dog and it’s outstanding. This show is SO funny and creative. Easy to binge. I binged the HBO season first and went back and watched the short, 5 minute videos from the web series. All great!
2. Half of Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon (aka Outlander book 2)
Yes, I’m including books as binge-able objects! I am someone who can stay up all night and finish a book. It counts.
I binged seasons 1 and 2 of Outlander in 5 days over winter break. I fell in love with the main characters and reading the original books is serving as my stand-in as I anxiously await season 3. The second book is a little slow. I think the TV narrative is actually better/tighter than the books. But, it’s still better than nothing!
I was browsing Reddit and stumbled across this guy’s video on how Louis C.K. structures his jokes. They’re nicely edited and very interesting!
4. “Farewell, President Obama” news articles and photo galleries
Cue the tears.
5. I See You – The xx’s new album
I’m also including albums because I didn’t watch a lot of TV this week. I took a trip to Big Bend National Park and Marfa, TX. Coincidentally, The xx recorded part of their new album in Marfa (see their video for “On Hold”) so I had to listen to the album a few times on the way there.
Alright, so I had a pretty busy week which hampered my binge potential, but I’ve got a pretty oddball set of things I couldn’t get enough of this week. PS: I’m notorious for starting something, old or new, and becoming obsessed with it in a sometimes unhealthy fashion.
1. I See You – The xx
I’m going to join Lane on this one and say that since it’s release on January 13, I’ve played this album as if it’s some part of my daily routine. I think this stems from how much I’ve missed them since their second album almost 4 years ago, but it’s also because the album is just so good. “Replica”, “I Dare You,” and “Say Something Loving” are my personal favorites, and luckily the band are touring the album and making multiple press appearances so I can continue to see these songs performed. Highly recommend their cover of Drake and Rihanna’s “Too Good” from the BBC Live Lounge and their performance of “Say Something Loving” on The Tonight Show here.
2. Girls– Season 1
At this point in my life I can pretty much perform the entire first season of HBO’s Girls from memory, but this week I finally was successful in getting my roommate Erin to start it. We’re currently 7 episodes into our viewing and I’m not going to lie, it’s more than likely going to start a full series binge for me soon. I truly do love this show, and the reality that it’ll be ending within the next two months is starting to hit.
3. Off Camera with Sam Jones
I don’t know how this binge happened, but it did. I decided to listen to Greta Gerwig’s episode (which is fantastic) and I ended up revisiting about 20 others. Some I had heard before, others I started and never finished, and some were ones I had skipped over before. Off Camera is a brilliant podcast and video series that centers on conversation. It never feels like an interview, and I think Sam Jones does a great job at creating a comfortable environment for artists to relax and talk openly. Recommended episodes: Mackenzie Davis, Mark Duplass, Jessica Chastain, Linda Cardellini, and Imogen Poots.
4. The Graham Norton Show-Various Episodes
I saw a clip of Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Sienna Miller, and Ben Affleck on The Graham Norton Show and I started searching for the entire episode. I finally came across it, watched it, and five hours later I had watched about 8 episodes. I’ve always enjoyed Graham Norton and I love the dynamics between his guests, but this was the first time I actually sat down and watched full episodes and really engaged with them. Definitely a fun binge to settle in from a long day of work to.
5. StyleLikeU Youtube Videos
I was tagged in a post about Jemima Kirke (Jessa from Girls) stripping down for a StyleLikeU video while talking about self-acceptance, letting go, etc. and was reminded of how beautiful this video series is. So, naturally, I found myself sitting through each one that came into the rotation Youtube provided for me. I felt empowered and inspired to acknowledge the changes in my life and the progress I’ve made recently in bettering myself. If you’re ever feeling down, doubtful, unsure, or just want to explore other people’s stories, please check out StyleLikeU‘s channel.
